WASTE MANAGEMENT & RECYCLING

WASTE CONTAINERS & COMPOST BINS
These are the appropriate types of separation methods, curbside containers, and composting bins.
METAL CAGE CONTAINERS
Put your trash bags in a curbside metal cage container so wildlife cannot get access to your trash.
COMPOST BINS
Place organic food waste in a closed bin to avoid attracting wildlife and convert your waste into compost you can use in the yard.
CEMENT CONTAINERS
Place trash inside a closed, wildlife-proof cement container for curbside pickup along the route.

DID YOU KNOW?

The nearest sanitary dump is located in Santa Cruz, although many illegal dump sites consistently pop up in the area where garbage is set on fire and pollutes our air and water.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
QUICK TIPS
HOW TO REDUCE YOUR IMPACT
  • Make sure you are up-to-date with your property taxes. This covers trash collection.
  • Place trash inside a closed (wildlife-proof) metal or cement container for curbside pickup along the route.

  • Make sure you are up-to-date with payments to the recycling center. Make a payment to Nosara Recycles here.

  • Recycle all plastic bottles and containers (#1 and #2); plastic bags (#4); metal (aluminum or tin); tetrapack; cardboard; glass.

  • Place clean, dry recyclables inside a transparent bag and next to/on top of your trash bin on the day prior to pickup for your route.

  • Separate and compost organic waste.

  • Use hand towels instead of disposable paper towels.

  • Skip the plastic bottles! Install a water filter or purchase a water dispenser in a returnable bottle.

  • Purchase products in returnable glass or recyclable containers only. Even better, buy in bulk and use refillable containers.

  • Do not use single-use plastics, and avoid plastics PVC3, PP5, PS6, or 7 which cannot be recycled in Nosara.

  • Use only reusable foodware.

  • Use a set of reusable grocery bags which are available in most supermarkets.

  • Do not burn trash or send it to illegal dump sites (see info below).

SINGLE-USE ITEMS
Put them in a non-transparent bag and place it inside your curbside bin.
RECYCLABLES
Clean and separate them in a clear transparent bag, and place it on top of your curbside bin the night before pickup.
ORGANIC WASTE
Keep organic waste out of your trash. Compost it or bury it in your yard! Don't throw it in the jungle or you'll attract wildlife.

ECO PRODUCTS

Be a conscious consumer and shop responsibly. Purchase eco products that are sustainably sourced and fair trade certified.

PLASTIC FREE OPTIONS

Say goodbye to single-use plastic and hello to plastic free options. Food containers made of biodegradable materials like cardboard (boxes) and paper (straws) reduce your carbon footprint.

BULK PURCHASING

Sustainable products focus on the entire product lifecycle from "Cradle-to-grave". "Cradle" is when natural materials are extracted. Waste disposal is called the "Grave". When you buy in bulk there is less packaging waste in the manufacturing process which reduces the impact of the product's lifecycle on the environment.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING

Use our electronics recycling resources for batteries, computers, smart phone, TVs, and entertainment systems.
